Wood is biologically unique. Unlike diamonds or gold, which form through basic geological forces occurring on countless planets, wood requires complex photosynthetic life. Because we haven't found a single tree beyond Earth, your wooden pencil is technically one of the rarest cosmic materials we know of. 
While carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are abundant across the cosmos, the precise steps needed to synthesize lignin and cellulose mean that forests are likely an extreme anomaly

  • Diamonds: Made of carbon subjected to high heat and pressure, which happens deep within planets and during star collisions. They are incredibly common in space, with entire planets likely made of them.
  • Wood: Requires liquid water, a stable atmosphere, and sunlight... It is a material produced only by life.
  • Scientific consensus: While the scientific community agrees wood is rare because it requires specific biology, the comparison is tricky because we can't fully survey extraterrestrial environments yet. Some researchers believe alien planets could host organic polymers similar to our cellulose, though true "wood" remains uniquely tied to Earth's biosphere. 
Because wood is confined almost exclusively to our planet, every wooden object you see is a testament to Earth's rare living conditions. Doesn't that make you want to grab something more precious and rare than a diamond?
